Yao's Mother

-Flashback-

Yao and his siblings (Ryouhei and Makoto) were at home with their dog when they got a phone call, which Yao answered.

He found out from the phone call that their mother is at the hospital. She had fainted and an ambulance was called for her, but she has not regained consciousness yet. If the findings from the check up were poor, they would have to do surgery. Yao said that he would head to the hospital immediately and noted down the hospital name.

When Yao finished the call, he used his cell phone while Ryouhei called out to him. However, Yao didn't answer him, as he was speaking on his cell phone with their grandmother. Yao requested for their grandmother to come to their house immediately.

Yao then put on his coat hastily and was about to leave the house, but Ryouhei frantically asked him what surgery he was talking about. While putting on his shoes, Yao explained that their mother fainted and is in hospital, so he was going to rush over.

Makoto said that they wanted to go with him, but Yao asked them to stay at home with their grandmother, who was coming over soon. He said that he would contact them as soon as he figured out exactly what happened to their mother.

Left at home, Ryouhei and Makoto looked at each other, worried.

-End of Flashback-

Hotaru's Decision

In the present, Hotaru is still at the train station with Ryouhei and Makoto. She calls Hananoi and explains to him the situation with Yao and his family. Ryouhei and Makoto simply couldn't stay put at home, so they left and tried to go after Yao, but got lost.

Hotaru says that she finds it unsafe for two young children to take the train alone, so she's thinking of accompanying them. She also thinks to herself that it would be nice if Hananoi could come with them too. She starts to ask about it, but Hananoi's reply interrupts her.

Hananoi asks if this task is something that she absolutely has to do. Hotaru is shocked by his question and doesn't know how to answer.

Hananoi: Since Yao asked for them to remain at home to await the news, wouldn't it be better to get them to return home...?
Hotaru: That's... true... but...
Hananoi: ...Please, don't go.
Hotaru: ......? Saki-ku-

Hotaru remembers her conversation with Non-chan, where Hotaru learnt that Yao only has his mother.

Makoto gets impatient and tugs on Ryouhei's arm, saying that she can't wait anymore. She asks for the two of them to move on without Hotaru. In that moment, Hotaru panics and makes her decision.

Hotaru apologizes to Hananoi over the phone and tells him that she will escort the children to the hospital, but then leave immediately to meet him after. She then hangs up and chases after the children.

Hananoi's Reaction

Left alone, Hananoi looks forlorn. He thinks back to a time where he linked pinky fingers with Hotaru, and suddenly utters, "Liar......".

Realizing what he just said, Hananoi suddenly covers his mouth in shock, then thumps his fist on the wall, disappointed with himself. He crouches to the ground.

Hotaru's Worry

Hotaru is now on the train with Yao's siblings. She thinks to herself that something about Hananoi seemed off.

However, Makoto starts tearing up out of worry for her mother. Hotaru reassures them that they will be arriving at the hospital soon and they can be by their mother's side.

At the Hospital

Makoto, accompanied by Hotaru and Ryouhei, bursts into the hospital waiting room. Yao is surprised to see all three of them. Hotaru sheepishly explains that she's here because she found them lost at the train station.

Yao is surprised and gently scolds his siblings for leaving, as they would have made their grandmother concerned. The three siblings share a hug.

Yao then thanks Hotaru for bringing them to the hospital. She asks him how he's doing. Yao explains that his mother most likely overworked herself. The check ups found that she had a brain hemorrhage, so she's undergoing surgery right now. It was a good thing that she was promptly brought to the hospital when she fainted. In the best case scenario, the surgery would be successful and she can recover with no side effects.

Yao starts to talk about the worst case scenario, but then stops himself. He chuckles painfully and says that they will only know the situation once the surgery is over.

Hotaru and Yao

Hotaru notices Yao's distress and remains silent for a short while. She then apologizes to him for not thinking things through properly and bringing his siblings here, causing him to have to act strong.

However, Yao says that that's not the case. He says that him being alone at the hospital would make him start thinking all sorts of things, so Hotaru was a big help.

Hotaru offers up a handkerchief to Yao. He then realizes that he is crying.

Covering his face in embarrassment, Yao remarks that Hotaru always seems to be around when he's at his lowest. He then apologizes and asks for Hotaru to give him a moment.

Update on the Surgery

A while later, a nurse approaches Yao and informs with a smile that the surgery was successful. They are still not able to determine if there will be side effects, but Yao's mother's life is no longer in danger. She then requests for Yao to go aside so that she can explain the details.

With that, Yao and his siblings leave with the nurse and bid goodbye to Hotaru. Hotaru waves back, then hurries to leave.

Meeting Up With Hananoi

Hotaru texts Hananoi to apologize for making him wait and informs that she will be heading over to where he is now.

The snow falling causes delays in the train services. Hotaru then texts Hananoi to inform him about the train delays. She asks if she can still meet him even if it's late. We also see Hotaru being squished on the train (it's crowded).

Hananoi replies her text to say that if the snowfall gets heavy, she will have trouble getting home, so she doesn't need to push herself so hard and that it's fine.

Seeing Hananoi's answer, Hotaru wonders to herself if she'd hurt Hananoi - because he initially said that he had something to talk to her about, yet he now says that it's fine. She wonders what to do if he is really mad.

Arriving at Hananoi's

Hotaru runs through the snow.

Later, she arrives at Hananoi's house, panting. Hananoi is surprised and concerned to see how wet Hotaru is. He asks her why she didn't use her umbrella, and she answers that since she was running, the umbrella wasn't of much use.

Hananoi fetches a towel for Hotaru and wipes her hair, saying that he already said she didn't have to push herself. Hotaru starts to apologize, but Hananoi smiles gently at her and says not to worry about it. He instead apologizes for speaking to her with a cold tone.

This makes Hotaru feel relieved. She thinks to herself that Hananoi is back to being his usual self.

Drying Up

Hananoi then changes the subject by pushing Hotaru into the house (her hair is messy and her coat is drenched).

A while later, Hananoi is drying Hotaru's hair with a hairdryer. Hotaru apologizes again for arriving so late. Hananoi reassures her again that it's fine and asks about Yao's mother.

Hotaru updates him that Yao's mother's surgery was successful, even though it is worrying that they are still not sure if there will be any side effects. She also mentions that it must be hard for Yao to hide his anxiety from his younger siblings. She says, "I hope it won't be too much for him..."

Hananoi was gently caressing Hotaru's hair while blow-drying it. After hearing Hotaru, he switches off the hair dryer while remaining silent, leading Hotaru to wonder what's wrong.

Intimacy

Hananoi suddenly hugs Hotaru from behind, surprising her. He then kisses the crook of her neck, ear and nape. Meanwhile, Hotaru starts to get flustered. She is reminded of when Hananoi told her (in Chapter 51),"I will always want to touch you."

Hananoi starts to slip his hand underneath Hotaru's sweater. However, her mind goes to the events that happened earlier in the day - watching Yao and his siblings, Yao breaking down - and she cries out for Hananoi to stop.

Flustered, Hotaru says that she is not in the mood today. Hananoi also snaps out of it and realizes how uncomfortable Hotaru is. He apologizes to Hotaru for going overboard. He takes his hands off her and sits away.

Hotaru breathes a sigh of relief, but then notices that Hananoi is silent. She thinks to herself that Hananoi must have misunderstood. She starts to explain that it wasn't because she is unwilling, but Hananoi gets up and opens the curtain to check the weather.

Going Home

Hananoi notes that the snow has stopped falling, so she should take this time to return home.

Hotaru brings up that Hananoi mentioned he had something to talk to her about, but Hananoi answers that it's fine for today and that they can talk another day.

Outside his house, Hananoi waves as Hotaru sets off for home.

While walking, Hotaru thinks to herself that Hananoi usually walks her to the bus stop, but today he didn't. (She also thinks to herself that it's actually fine even if he didn't.) She wonders if Hananoi was mad after all, because she talked about Yao and also was so late to meet him. She even turned down Hananoi's advances to be intimate.

Hotaru face palms for being awful towards Hananoi today. (However, she also thinks that since Yao's family had such a serious incident, she couldn't get into the mood for intimacy just like that.)

Hotaru thinks about how Hananoi had mentioned (in the previous chapter) that he needs some courage. She stops in her tracks and looks at Hananoi's apartment, thinking to herself that Hananoi was being considerate of her feelings and did not get mad at her despite feeling anxious about something.

She thinks that it might be better if he had just gotten mad. She decides to apologize to Hananoi again tomorrow when she sees him, and wonders what he wants to talk to her about.
